What are improper fractions and mixed numbers? Well that is a very good question because in this lesson we'll be learning just that!

Improper fractions are fractions that have a greater numerator than the denominator. So let's take the improper fraction 9/4:

Improper fractions are fractions that have a greater numerator than the denominator. So let's take the improper fraction 9/4:

__9__

4

In order to convert this into a mixed number, just divide the numerator by denominator:

9/4 equals 2 remainder 1.

The quotient (2) is whole number the remainder (1) is numerator and the divisor (4) is denominator.

2 and 1/4 is the mixed number conversion for 9/4.

A mixed number consists of a whole number and a fractions and that why it's called a

__mixed__number. Let's take the mixed number 4 and 4/5 and lets try to transform it like this:
4

__4__= 5 x 4=20__24__
5 20+4=24 5

So now we know that a mixed number can be transformed into a improper by multiplying the denominator by the whole number then adding the product to the numerator then making the answer into the numerator and keep the denominator as it is. We also know how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number!
